Topic 25 | Moving beyond sectarian disputes about religious truth

Religious freedom can help us move beyond arguments about religious truth. We can disagree about religious truth while sharing a deep commitment to religious freedom. Religious freedom does not protect religious truth from criticism or opposition; rather, it protects human beings in their right to seek, choose, embrace and follow religious truth.

  • Religious freedom is a cornerstone principle that has the potential to transcend divisive sectarian disputes regarding religious truth.

    • Encourages coexistence. Religious freedom allows individuals the autonomy to practice and express their religious beliefs without coercion or discrimination, thus fostering tolerance and respect for diverse perspectives to coexist peacefully.

    • Individual autonomy underscores the significance of allowing individuals the freedom to choose and practice their religious beliefs without fear of persecution or discrimination.

    • Harmonious societies. Embracing religious freedom facilitates the creation of a harmonious society where people of different faiths can engage in dialogue and cooperation.

  • We can disagree about religious truth while sharing a deep commitment to religious freedom. The acknowledgment that diverse perspectives on religious truth can coexist within a framework of unwavering dedication to religious freedom exemplifies a mature and tolerant approach to societal coexistence.
